How to Sign Up for Medicare
Enrolling in Medicare can be confusing as the process varies for different people. While some are automatically enrolled, others need to actively sign up for Medicare Part A and Part B. Understanding the right steps is crucial to avoid penalties. Here’s a comprehensive guide on how and when to apply for Medicare.

How to Apply for Medicare

Method #1: Automatic Enrollment
If you're already receiving Social Security benefits, you will be automatically enrolled in Medicare Part A and Part B. You should receive your red, white, and blue Medicare card in the mail about three months before your 65th birthday. If you don’t receive it by then, contact Social Security to verify your mailing address.

Note: Automatic enrollment applies to those already receiving Social Security benefits.

Method #2: Online Enrollment
If you need to manually sign up for Medicare, the simplest method is online enrollment. Follow these steps:

  1. Visit the Social Security Website www.ssa.gov/benefits/medicare

  2. Expand the Information you will need to provide to ensure you have all necessary information ready.

  3. For Signing up both Part A & B, Click on Sign Up for Medicare “Apply online”

  4. For Signing up for Part B, Click on Sign Up for Part B Only "Get started"

  5. Click “Start a New Application”

  6. Fill out the required information and submit your application.

Method #3: In-Person Enrollment
For those who prefer or need to enroll in person:

  1. Call Social Security at (800) 772-1213 to schedule an appointment.

  2. Alternatively, visit your nearest Social Security office without an appointment. Arriving early, before the office opens, can often get you in without an appointment.

Important: Always ask for an “Application Summary” as proof of your Medicare number and effective dates, confirming your enrollment.
